Wie vertelt het verhaal van een cultuur, en vanuit wiens perspectief? Studio Kafunda en Movies that Matter tonen op het Marineterrein twee films, waarvan de tweede een antwoord vormt op de vraag die de eerste stelt.
On 15 August, Studio Kafunda and Movies That Matter bring Kafunda Film Fest to the Marineterrein. Studio Kafunda is built on a simple idea: a richer view of the world starts with a richer variety of perspectives. That’s why we create space for work by artists who tell stories from within their own cultural context, bringing perspectives to audiences in the Netherlands that are still too rarely seen.
For its first edition, Kafunda Film Fest brings together two films in dialogue, with the second responding to a question raised by the first. You can watch both films or join us for one. In between the two screenings, Sudanese artist Razeen will perform songs from his recently released debut album Yallah Nargus.

Stop Filming Us
Stop Filming Us by Dutch director Joris Postema is the first screening of Kafunda Film Fest and will be followed by the first Kafunda Aftertalk.
In the film, Postema travels to Goma, a city he once experienced largely through the lens of a Western NGO. This time, he encounters Congolese photographers and filmmakers who see and portray their city very differently. As their perspectives collide, Postema begins to question his own. How much of the image he creates is shaped by the Western lens he brings with him? Should he be making this film at all? And how much of a place do we miss when we only ever see it from the outside? And who ultimately decides which stories and ways of filmmaking get seen?
Kafunda Aftertalk
After the screening, moderator Nikita Krouwel continues the conversation with director Joris Postema, creative producer Leia Amerding of OSCAM and spoken word artist Glodi Mbwete of Stichting Wij Zijn Congolezen.
Nikita Krouwel is a cultural worker whose practice combines research, writing and programming. Her work focuses on histories of the African diaspora, anticolonialism and emancipation more broadly. She is particularly interested in bringing these histories to wider and more diverse audiences through cultural programming and public conversations.
Joris Postema is a Dutch documentary filmmaker and director of Stop Filming Us. In the film, shot in Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he examines his own position as a Western filmmaker and questions what it means to tell a story about a place and culture from the outside.
Leia Amerding is a creative producer, speaker and moderator whose work focuses on race theory, visual culture, African contemporary art and amplifying the voices of young visual makers of colour. She is currently Head of the Young OSCAM Trainees Program and Production at Open Space Contemporary Art Museum (OSCAM) in Amsterdam.
Glodi Mbwete is a spoken-word artist whose performances and music draw on his Congolese roots, personal experiences and faith. He regularly performs and gives workshops to young people. Glodi is also co-founder of Ik Spreek, a platform for emerging talent, and Stichting Wij Zijn Congolezen, through which he works to strengthen the Congolese community in the Netherlands and increase the visibility of the Congolese diaspora.
Razeen is a Sudanese artist raised in the Netherlands. Bringing together his Afro-Arab roots with influences from Western pop music, his music moves between the different cultures and worlds that have shaped him. At Kafunda Film Fest, he will perform songs from his recently released debut album Yallah Nargus.
